CSR is an integral part of our business operations
“Contribution to the society and community makes good business sense. We must give back so that we can grow and survive for a very long time together.” – Ms. Jenny Chea, Deputy CEO of CMED Group.
CMED Group recognizes that with success comes to an increased responsibility to contribute to society. As a Cambodian-owned business, the organization’s leaders have an additional incentive to use their influence to make a positive difference. Cambodia is a developing nation, and there is a need for improvement in many sectors, but in areas where CMED can make a difference, it is determined to use its influence to assist in Cambodian society’s advancement.
The three key areas of our social responsibility activities are:
Environmental Impact
There are few current regulations enforcing a structured approach to reducing the impact of construction in Cambodia, so the CMED Group has created its own initiatives. CMED believes all Cambodians should be invested in the development of the country, but in turn, construction companies need to be sensitive to the obvious impact projects have on the lives of citizens.
CMED is committed to considering neighbours and providing protection for them. With the help of strict processes, its construction teams prevent dust reaching neighbouring homes, apply very strict policies on the preparation of scaffolding, and all car tires must be cleaned before employees and contractors leave the building site. In Cambodia it is not a must. There are no regulations forcing CMED Construction to take these precautions, but it is within the business’ control, and as per our CSR policy, anything that we can influence is used to provide positive change.
Safety
If CMED could be defined by a single trait it would be the core element of its philosophy: trust. It is a constant consideration in all its division’s work practices, and the most obvious example is safety. To CMED, no project, however profitable or prestigious, can be compared to a human life. The wellbeing of workers, customers and the community is paramount. That’s why CMED exceeds all safety requirements and compliance to set the best standards.
CMED takes additional measures to apply the latest international policy and procedures to their operations. Beyond being 100% compliant, the company has formed an EHS (Environmental Health and Safety) division to ensure its strict guidelines are never compromised. Safety is the single most important consideration, especially for CMED’s thriving construction division which is constantly searching for the latest innovations and techniques to improve the integrity of its structures and work processes.
Personal Development
The devastation of Cambodia’s civil war continues to have an impact on Cambodian society, and one of the most obvious inadequacies of modern Cambodia is its lack of well-educated and qualified graduates. This deficiency comes at a time when demand for local talent is at an all-time high, especially in the booming property sector. CMED’s founders were among many Cambodians who were denied a formal education, yet they have built incredibly successful businesses, including the CMED Group. It’s no surprise that the organisation’s leadership places particular importance on the advancement of talented Cambodians.
CMED’s ‘Skills Up’ program exceeds the personal development initiatives found in most companies. Its internal training now rivals the best external courses, and with the help of a multicultural team that includes industry-leading experts, Cambodian recruits are exposed to onsite training that equips them with required skills and accelerates their progress. For CMED, the emphasis on education is not only a practical way to increase the value of its team. The company’s founders consider it a personal mission.
